Cross Country Meets April 23, April 30and May 7
Dear Cross-Country families,
Our after school cross-country meets are nearly upon us. All 3 meets will take place at Centennial Park in Central Saanich. Students will need to leave immediately at the end of school, but please do not pick your child(ren) up early. Parking will be a challenge due to construction, but we are the closest school and among the first to arrive. We encourage you to car pool or park further away and walk over.
Meets start around 3:30pm and go until ~ 5:00pm. Students will run in the following order:
Meet # 1 - April 23rd: Grade 3, Grade 4, Grade 5
Meet #2 - April 30th: Grade 4, Grade 5, Grade 3
Meet #3 - May 7th: Grade 5, Grade 3, Grade 4
Brentwood Beliefs: The meets are exciting events and we are very fortunate to be able to use Centennial park for our races. It’s important that students continue to follow our Brentwood Beliefs while at the meets. We will go over expectations with the x-country team and know they will continue to make us proud by taking care of the park, themselves and each other.
Waiting for your race: When you arrive, make your way over to the Brentwood sign. Once a staff member arrives, students will be given a Brentwood pinnie if they don’t already have one. If students have a green Brentwood tech shirt they are welcome to wear it instead. Students are to remain at our school sign while waiting for our warm up and their race to be called. Once your race is called, make your way to the start line.
After your race: Before you leave, be sure to return your pinnie. You are welcome to go to the finish line to cheer on others. Please do not run along the race route or reach out to high five runners. No students should be over at the top of the hill or along the wooden fence by the finish line for safety reasons. Please stay within the boundaries of the park.
Marshalling: Please consider volunteering as a marshal at the April 30th meet as our school is one of the hosts. We need over 40 adults each week to line the course and our school is responsible for 15 of those marshals. Marshals do need to stay in their spot until the end of the meet. We appreciate your support as these meets wouldn’t happen without it.
What to bring: Please be prepared for a range of weather. Running shoes are, of course, a necessity. Sunscreen is a very good idea even on partly cloudy days. Sweatpants, hoodies, and jackets are also handy to ensure that runners stay warm while waiting for their race. A labelled water bottle and a snack should also be packed.
Parking at Centennial: We recognise there is active construction along Wallace during the meets and that parking is a challenge. We encourage families to carpool and consider parking further away and walking up to the park if possible. Please park as closely and safely as possible to the vehicle beside you to help create as many parking spaces as possible. We will do our best to wait for everyone to arrive before starting the meet. Please note that the Saanich Baptist Church just across from Centennial Park has offered to share their parking lot during our cross-country meets. A huge thank you to them for being such kind neighbours.
Thank you,
